What is Black Yoga? Exploring the Ancient Practice of Kemetic Yoga

In the world of yoga, there exists a practice that goes beyond the traditional postures and stretches, diving deep into the realms of ancient Egyptian spirituality and philosophy. Kemetic Yoga, also known as Egyptian Yoga, Black Yoga or African Yoga is an ancient African practice that encompasses physical movements, meditation, and breath control. This unique practice is designed for transformation and empowerment to foster not only physical well-being but also a connection to the roots of ancient Egypt.

Unearthing the Origins of Smai Tawi (Egyptian Yoga)

Kemetic Yoga traces its origins back to the land of the pharaohs, to the fertile banks of the Nile River, where the ancient Egyptians sought harmony between the body, mind, and soul. The term “Kemetic” refers to the ancient name for Egypt, derived from the word “Kemet,” meaning “black land” due to the fertile soil left behind by the annual flooding of the Nile. This practice draws inspiration from the hieroglyphs, artwork, and wisdom texts found within the tombs and temples of this remarkable civilization. Making yoga, in all its variations, being originally from Egypt.

Practicing Kemetic Yoga

A few ways that Kemetic Yoga differs from the other forms of yoga are

  1. The various breathing methods such as the rule of 4 breathing, the cleansing breath, etc. The various forms of breathwork can be used to heal and regulate the body either from dis-ease or emotions.
  2. The seven laws of ancient Kemet that Kemetic Yoga emerges from that frames the foundation of yoga.
  3. Its African origin, which sets it apart from Indian yoga.

Kemetic Yoga places great emphasis on developing a strong mind-body connection, and the different forms of breathing acts as a bridge to achieve this union. By focusing on the breath and its alignment with movement, practitioners cultivate a deeper awareness of their physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions. This heightened consciousness allows for a more profound understanding of oneself and the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit.

What I love most about Kemetic yoga is the emphasis  placed on the breath and letting the breath guide your movement. This is not a fast paced practice, but is done at a slower pace connecting your inhale and exhale with each movement. One may start practicing yoga by going through the Journey of Ra (the Kemetic sun salutation) and by exploring the rule of four breathing.

Knowing the true roots of yoga has empowered my practice like ever before and has confirmed all the things I have learned all of these years. I know from observing my very own Haitian mother’s routine, and her commitment to serving our God (Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior) that she has been doing this form of practice all of these years. Though she had no prior knowledge of the term “Yoga”, the routines and rituals were passed down to her from our ancestors. The way my mother wakes up in the early mornings to pray, to meditate on God’s word day and night, and to stretch her body on the floor (without ever needing a mat) explains to me why I always felt that deep connection to “yoga”. Rather she calls it yoga or not does not matter at all. What matters is that we, too, African people, have a system that empowers us to heal, and that reconnects us to our authentic spiritual self.

Kemetic Yoga offers a gateway to a holistic practice that honors the ancient wisdom of our African ancestors while nurturing our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. This ancient wisdom has been lost throughout history and deserves a spot in the yoga world. Between the atlantic slave trade and the epidemic of preventable diseases that have plagued mother earth, we have lost so much. We have lost our identity and our sacred ancient teachings. We need healing and it’s time we tap into our divine nature.

Whether you’re intrigued by the rich history or seeking a unique way to enhance your yoga journey, Kemetic Yoga welcomes ALL who wish to embark on a path of self-discovery, balance, and unity.

As you delve into this ancient practice, remember that Kemetic Yoga is not just about physical postures; it’s a profound exploration of the interconnectedness of all aspects of life. Through its principles and movements, you can tap into the timeless wisdom of the Nile and uncover a new dimension of yoga that resonates with both the past and the present.
